Value for Society

A second life for construction waste

Building the new Velindre Cancer Center with bricks made from recycled waste

Nearly 60,000 K-Briq bricks will form part of the New Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, Wales, one of the most sustainable hospitals in the United Kingdom. This innovative solution transforms construction and demolition waste into new building materials capable of meeting the technical requirements of major infrastructure projects.

The hospital, which has achieved a BREEAM Excellent certification, incorporates high-energy-efficiency solutions and low-carbon materials that help reduce its environmental impact. Among them are K-Briq bricks, which will be used in various service and operational support areas of the facility.

Developed in collaboration with the Scottish company Kenoteq, winner of Sacyr iChallenges 2023, these bricks are made from more than 90% recycled materials, avoiding the use of virgin raw materials. In addition, their manufacturing process eliminates the traditional firing required for ceramic bricks, significantly reducing energy consumption and enabling a carbon footprint that is 95% lower than that of a conventional brick.

At Sacyr, we promote solutions that reduce the environmental impact of our infrastructure and support the circular economy. The incorporation of innovative materials demonstrates that it is possible to build essential infrastructure for society while encouraging a more responsible use of resources.
